Paulo Cunha e Silva

Paulo Cunha e Silva was a doctor, art critic and art curator and between September 2013 and November 2015 served as councillor for Culture of Porto City Council. Born in Beja in 1962, he graduated in Medicine from the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto, from where he held a PhD in Sports Sciences. He was an Associate Professor of Contemporary Thought at the Faculty of Sports of the University of Porto, and previously worked as Professor of Anatomy at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences. His research work investigated the status of the body in the contemporary world and the use of chaos methodologies to understand it. His professional activity was always linked to theoretical reflection about contemporary art. He served as scientific coordinator of Contemporary Studies of the Serralves Foundation from 2000 onwards, and he was responsible for the areas of Thought, Science, Literature and Transversal Projects in the context of "Porto 2001 European Capital of Culture". Between 2003 and 2005 he was the director of the Institute of Arts of the Ministry of Culture, and between 2009 and 2012 served as cultural advisor to the Portuguese Embassy in Rome. He passed away after suffering a heart attack on the night of November 11, 2015. Paulo was a genius, an unforgettable builder of surprising new connections, and had a major influence on Portuguese culture over the course of his life. That’s why we’ve decided to dedicate this award to him in Porto.
